SHERLOCK HOLMES-THE LAST VAMPYRE (1993) ** Jeremy Brett is far from my favorite Holmes, he generally lacks the gravitas required-but here he compensates with a better than usual performance by remaining aloof, somewhat askance but engaged, threading his own performance into the air of mystery. And of course I'm always up for a vampire flick and when they mixed in South American mystery religions I had high hopes. Those hopes weren't dashed violently or immediately, but eventually petered out to the point where, by the end of the film, I wasn't sure where the last of them had been lost. It's not a wrong- or bad-looking Holmes flick, and I guess some stuff does happen, but it lays a nice ground work and then never quite gets going.
