SKY HIGH (2005) **1/2 Ok, if it's a spoiler to tell you in a film about the son of two superheroes, that he doesn't have any superpowers but just might discover them in time for the thrilling conclusion...you're probably reading the wrong reviewer anyway. Lots of people will assume you're dumb. And imagine! A whole high school full of kids with superpowers....wow! It's slightly towards what you'd hope for from what you'd expect: a nice little story reminding young high schoolers that everyone has problems, everyone gets misunderstood sometimes, everyone gets their head turned by the wrong person once or twice, but your true friends and family are what really matters. There. None of the actors are just amazing great but Steven Strait has a lot of presence, Danielle Panabaker shows a lot of soul, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead is way too sweet to actually believe that she's carnivorous, or anything. You've seen Kurt Russell better, you've seen Kelly Preston much worse; which is to say that they're as credible as required and everyone's playing at about the same, quite acceptable, level. The soundtrack is a bunch of early MTV smashes reworked to make them sound like they're actually pretty good songs, which is the most amazing feat including those featured. I think it's fun.
