SPACEHUNTER: ADVENTURES IN THE FORBIDDEN ZONE (1983) **1/2 Will the elements of faux Han Solo/Indiana Jones be enough to offset the watered down elements of Mad Max ? In another planet where apparently no one ever bathes? At least Max is watered down....and with Ivan Reitman producing? He wouldn't let it get...too stupid? But with sets worthy of invoking Metropolis itself? Look mate, they can't all be gems, and by the late 20th century derivative was a better game than most of the original. No, Peter Strauss is no Harrison Ford, but Har couldn't be everywhere, you know. And if Molly Ringwald's kind of irritating, she's, you know, Molly Ringwald and she's supposed to be. And being Molly...you know she's going to somehow, kind of, at least a little bit, win her way into your...tolerance if not necessarily adoration...by the end. And Ernie Hudson's in it, so there's that small part of the Ivan/Ernie Ghostbusters axis. It's not as good as all that, but it's entertaining and fun and the good guys win without it ever totally grossing out. Ah, that late 20th century man, imagine the kind of culture that felt like producing this kind of stuff. A bit of fun, actually.
