ST. TRINIAN'S (2007) *** My wife came home and I told her that I'd watched this with our twelve-year old son. She was concerned, "Is it appropriate for him?" "No," I answered honestly, "it's not appropriate for anyone of any age." Spiritually it owes more to Rock 'n' Roll High School and the re-made Ocean's Eleven than the relatively genteel The Great St. Trinians Train Robbery, but there's no reason to worry about that because it's way better. Anarchy, the teenage way, you know. It's an ok story, but whoever did the casting was brilliant: Tamsin Egerton is so perfect in her role that you wonder if she actually has any idea that they're making a movie, Gemma Arterton is so obviously someone who would be running things from the middle of this awfulness, ….all the girls, actually, are brilliant. But the greatest, the greatest of all, I have to say, is….Rupert Everett in drag. Not the most appealing, certainly not the sexiest, maybe the smartest but definitely the most compelling. This is someone's great idea of how to tell British girls that there's hope, no matter what out-the-window looks like.
