STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN (1982) **1/2 I guess most everyone either loves Star Trek or hates it, but I don't. I kind of like it most of the time, here too. It's difficult for me to imagine the sensation-for a true Trekkie-of the Starship Enterprise coming across a giant screen like that...but I know it must be a very big deal. Leonard Nimoy's always been my favorite part of it, and the scene between him and William Shatner where they discuss who's going to captain the ship...it's very powerful, actually. I can see how the big showdown between Shatner and Ricardo Montalban (looking a bit like Rod Stewart and Arnold Schwarzenegger's love child...you've got to love the art of makeup, or not...) is going to have historic implications for some, though I hurry to add that it's going to be different things to different people. The Spock and McCoy, Apollonian and Dionysian interplay, is amusing for its implications as much as its cartoon-like presentation, and it's all permeated by that half smart and serious/half joking hybrid dynamic that's always driven the thing during its best moments.
