THE STATION AGENT (2003) *** Is it an existential film? Yes it exists. But is it an existential film? Existence is binary. so yes. Ok, but is it an existential film like, you know, Bergman or somebody? You believe that some things are more existential than others? It's easy to make a film like this and look like an idiot. It may be just as easy to make a more interesting one (oh you think some things are more interesting than others?!), but it happens less often. Many characters assume a particular realism as the result of their representing a certain archetype...the individuals in this film assume a more profound realism as they depict individuals that we have never before met, but assume to exist without the assumption having been engaged. So you must have excellent actors-Peter Dinklage is very believable and central as the dwarf, and Patricia Clarkson as the tormented artist. If Bobby Cannavale can't do any other character, he should be in demand to do this one. If he has anything else, I want to see it. Great, great, but what do they do, what happens ? They hang out some, sometimes one or more of them walk along the train track. So nothing happens? How could nothing happen ? Ah, I see, nothing happens...it's an existential film.
