STINGRAY (1978) ** This must be about the most '70s thing ever made. Not great or even particularly good, mind you, but soooooo '70s. It has elements of "The Dukes of Hazzard," but with way more firearms, but without the sublime genius that the Dukes reached in their greatest moments or the general good-naturedness that they emitted as naturally as breathing. It also has elements of Airplane! , I'm not suggesting that it inspired that more relentlessly half-humored work so much as that they share a certain spirit, and, likely source material (I won't say "inspiration). More than most films, it is what it is and absolutely nothing more: and as such achieves its greatest expression during the car chase scenes, employing a nearly impressive array of obstacles and alternate means of locomotion. I can't say that I recommend it, a lot, but droll it is and I have to admit to laughing some of the times they wanted me to.
