STORM (1999) ** There's going to be a temptation.because Martin Sheen's in it, and because it's about the CIA behaving badly and all that, for vulgarian metaphor hunters to start abounding on about it. Such theatrics are unnecessary: this is a disaster flick, plain and simple. As a matter of fact it's even somewhat derivative (madmen trying to take over the world by controlling the weather) from the most wildly popular epoch of the American soap opera, "General Hospital." No, there were no military hospitals, I mean generals in it, more it was just, you know, kind of a hospital in a general sort of way. Now this , this is probably in some ways better, and I can only not say that the way I want to because I refused to ever watch "General Hospital." You can't discredit Luke Perry on being a mildly updated "aw, man" variation on the old "aw, shucks" leading man, because what else do you want him to do? Go back to bagging at Ralph's? I think not, not when he's capable of this, and by that I mainly mean being so earnest about it all as the lack of realism gives way to scenes bearing little in regard to anything you'd expect that you'd want to watch. But maybe you do, because it's non-monotonous! Sheen gives Luke lessons in raffish charm as he keeps the piece relatively afloat, and it would have been pretty damn hard to do more than that. I looked on in horror as they developed a love triangle between Luke and his old girlfriend, but when it turned out that the other corner was the all-time stereotypical L.A. loser (played with the precise panache of the perpetrated by David Sederholm), yeah that part worked for me, too. But the maudlin smarmy music!!!-omigoodness, can you imagine anything that would go with that ?! (is it mantises that expire upon orgasm? yeah it might work for that)
