STRAIGHT TALK (1992) ** Ok, you sign up for a Dolly Parton movie you know what you get: happytime golucky, plain good folk gonna overcome. High art connoisseurs check your wine baggage at the barn door. And it's a fair facsimile of that. I don't know if they cast James Woods as the male lead because they were afraid someone else might make Dolly look....you know, like not a great actress or something....but....I mean, I have no idea why anyone ever decided to put James Wood in a movie. He must be like the ultra-Aardvark in a megapowerful secret society or something...although that doesn't seem likely either. Maybe there's just some people makin' movies don't know much about what they're doin'? Is that possible? Anyway, if you don't expect much you'll get it, and if you're not obnoxious about it you might have a relatively good time. If you like Dolly, you get Dolly: all Dolly, all the time, Dolly the good, Dolly the wise, Dolly the romantic, Dolly the vulnerable, Dolly the tough. Dolly's done what she's supposed to, but how did Griffin Dunne never end up king of the soaps?
