SWARMED (2005) *1/2 Hapless inhabitants of a small Indiana hamburger-loving hamlet are harried by biologically bogused-out bees! Nope, that's it, no more, you're either in or out. Beyond that it's just kind of wall-papered onto the Jaws scenario where the mayor's afraid to warn tourists (good heavens, at least four of them must have mingled with the thirty locals at the televised hamburger competition…imagine if there'd been less!). To be fair, the unintentionally disastrous corporate genius scientist immediately takes responsibility for the terror he's created, but that's probably because he thinks Carol Alt won't like him if he doesn't. She's more credible as a scientific genius/professorial type than those jealous of her meteoric rise from ROTC major to Sports Illustrated swimsuit model to this would like to admit, but I didn't say I'd cast her in that role, personally. There are some other, more intentionally silly, bits-it's not afraid to mock itself gently, and probably would do so more profoundly if it could figure out how-I think they were even trying to reference Ghostbusters in there a few times, and not without raising a gentle if condescending smile to the edges of my lips. There are several scenes of displeased inhabitants chasing bees with shotguns that are even better. Nah, that wasn't a spoiler, that was a lure!
