THAT THING YOU DO! (2006) **1/2 Tom Hanks does an incredible job of making it look and feel like the late '50s on the cusp of turning into the '60s, which didn't happen until...when, '66 or so? I don't know, I was a baby, but from what came after it must have been like this. He also gives a portrayal of show biz that is at once honest in that lousy way, and ultimately loving. Yeah, it is what it is. Maybe sometimes a giant or a monster can change it, but he doesn't know anything about that. So it's a simple piece about a pop band hitting a roller coaster with a simple piece, and how the going up is worth the coming down. And I think that's right, though I have to admit that I don't know anything about a professional roller coaster like this.
