THERE'S A GIRL IN MY SOUP (1970) ** The idea was to set out and bare forth on sexual hypocrisy. They did that. Forced social statements abound and it's not all one-sided: the counterculture is depicted in a negative cartoon; albeit one that was easy enough to laugh at and embrace. The problem, as a film, being that these very deliberately profound and liberating statements hem in the actors. Great actors. Peter Sellers and Goldie Hawn in their prime making speeches, moving from situation to situation generally intended to edify and illuminate and impress. And be hip, make no mistake about it, the ultimate goal here is to be hip. They do pretty well on that one, but the most moving section of the film is, ironically enough, when it turns simple love story and throws all the pontificating to the wind, instead settling for being a music video of not particularly inspired music. Why does that part work so well? Because Peter and Goldie are free spirits, because they're brilliant at projecting happiness, because they're very appealing actors whom you want everything in the world to go right for.
