20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA (1916) * Captain Nemo runs around in a Santa suit reaping revenge against society by picking up survivors from boat wrecks he caused..? Well, that's how it looks. It must have been an incredible achievement for the time, the underwater photography and all. But my favorite part is the "nature child" dance: she ain't no Isadora Duncan, but it's very funny. Unfortunately, just as you have hope, then it goes into what appears to be an extended 7th grade biology film about sea lichens and anemones. Again, this must have seemed remarkable at the time, but for purposes of posterity is considerably less than, you know, if they'd had a fine variety of gaudily-plumed hats or something. Finally settling back in towards a plot, they decide to clear up a "mystery" allegedly left by Jules Verne's text, without any of the sudden jolting that one might associate with a delicate mystery solved.
