UCHÛJIN TÔKYÔ NI ARAWARU (1956) *1/2 Ok, there are these space creatures that look like starfish with a big eyeball in their bellybutton. "Those have got to be the dumbest costumes I've ever seen," quoth my fair wife. The people mainly stand pointing at them from ten feet away, going "aaaaaaaaaarrrghhhhh!!!!!" Then they threw me with a reference to the "university rocket unit." Tokyo University has a rocket unit! Maaan , my university didn't have a rocket unit, and I went to LSU (Harvard of the South)! If they did, though, all those Hawkwind guys would have signed up. That would have been better than this film! That might have been better than any film! This film kind of goes downhill as soon as the aliens morph out of the starfish suits. The best of it is scientists making ponderous noises, I guess. It's probably not as much of a bummer as awaiting the real end of the world, but the possibility of comparison does raise itself. By the time they try and get the starfish going again it's too late.
