A WALTON EASTER (1997) *1/2 John-Boy's asked to recommend a book to keep a troubled young student interested in reading, and he suggests a dictionary. That sets the tone for it. The Waltons always traded heavily in sentimentality and schmaltz-a born tolerance rather than acquired taste-but they rarely so struggled getting deeper than this soap opera style veneer. As they moved into the late '60s it would have been less appropriate and more horrifying if they were rolling around the yard smoking dope and having abortions, but it couldn't have been much dumber. A bunch of characters wandering around looking for something to do, even if you like 'em there's relatively little pay-off in that. Not that there was ever anything sexy about it, but this really misses Grandma and Grandpa's romantic tension.
