WON IN THE CLOUDS (1928) ** It must have been just incredible, in those days, to see real footage of a live lion! Still is I guess, we've just got lousier than noticing. And people flying in an airplane, high and fast above the earth! And just surviving in the jungles of Africa! Wow! We're just not offered adventures like that anymore-on a mass scale....Want to go shoot Iraqis? Want to become a drug addict? Want to go sit in an office and talk? And just the idea of making movies back before everyone had already figured out how to do everything a thousand different ways. How will we film these air shots? Who wants to be the one in the room with the lion? We have to look harder for our thrills these days I guess, we've lost so much of the novelty of purity that we pursue the recklessness... A lot of these old silent movies-especially the ones that no one's bothered to endow with a soundtrack-have difficulty maintaining my attention, but this one didn't, and there was a good, pleasant appealing humour to it all. It wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that they show a version of this in Heaven on Thursday nights, with John Belushi playing every role.
