YOU DON'T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN (2008) *** This is immediately, more than that-automatically, my favorite Adam Sandler movie. They should give out an Academy Award for cojones , and they should give it to Adam Sandler even if their personal taste is not the very furry ones. He has seen enough, heard enough, and been asked to contribute to enough bullshit. He has something to say. And rarely has so much been said by saying so little...so little of directness or coherence. By cleverly ignoring religion (the man's a genius, I always said so) he is able to say, "I don't know if thousands of years of conflict in the Middle East is too stupid to talk about. Sometimes I think so. But it is too stupid to fight about any longer. I know this...and whoever stops, you can have my soul." I did hear him that say. Very clearly. He is not too intellectual, because maybe that's already too much of the problem; he is not so righteous, because he knows it's generations too late for that; he is disgusting, not because that has so much to do as just he likes disgusting. I have no idea who this is made for: I would guess that many Israelis and Palestinians will dislike it fairly majorly, it's not sophisticated enough (it's soo unsophisticated) for the Amnesty International Set, it's too intellectual for the pee-pee jokes crowd, and there's not much in it for Playboy connoisseurs....but I do know who it's for. It's for Adam. It risks antagonizing a huge portion of his fan base. And Mel Gibson. He doesn't care. It's his gift to himself. His way of saying "I am not just a man, I am my own man." Enjoy. I want to say something profound, something supportive....um, Amen?
