YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES (1085) **1/2 Barry Levinson with Steven Spielberg lookin' over his shoulder: it's about what you would expect. It looks cool, it's professionally put together, and it's quite secure in its own accomplishment beyond anything actually on offer. A murder mystery to neither shock nor offend, one you can take the kiddies to...a nice movie for a bright teenage young man and his clever girlfriend. Of course there are major plot and continuity problems that Barry and Steve figure none of this expansive target audience will notice, or at least linger on. And they're probably right, if you want an art flick go somewhere else. When this first came out I was convinced that Sophie Ward would become a major star...she has a winning aspect but I'm not sure why I was so entirely convinced. Some major Sherlock fans may be slightly annoyed, but no one should, I think.
