ZOOM (2006) **1/2 It's a fun and silly movie for kids, nothing thrown in to impress adults. So if you lost touch with your inner child long, long ago, forget about it. But it's fun, and it is very silly, and there's that fake sense of danger to impress a child, but we all know that the good guys are going to win and that everyone left standing will turn good at the end anyway. Tim Allen may not be historically great at this sort of thing (like, say Fred MacMurray or Robin Williams or Dick Van Dyke), but you can't fault him for not holding up his part. As a burned out ex-superhero it's difficult to think of better casting...Bruce Willis maybe, Walter Matthau....I dunno. Anyway he's lots of fun too, and you have to be a desperado to be trying to put this film into any sort of cinematic historical context anyway. I never liked "Friends," but early on I thought that Courteney Cox might be the one to transcend that level of material: so here she is, playing to 10 year-olds as a pseudo-librarian whose great talent is... And there's Chevy Chase. It's a good movie, it accomplished all that it set out to do, everyone should be proud of being in it.
