DEMOLITION MAN (1993) **1/2 STAH-lone! Yes, yes, Sylvester Stallone is back and in character, running about as a 21st century L.A. cop in a New Age futureworld-on-Prozac, trying to catch the bad guy. The writers make some nice points about the future ( I wonder what secret society[ies] or elements thereof they're going after with all this Cocteau talk ), tongue semi-firmly in cheek, but most of the thought of this went into making sure that the explosions look cool. They do. Not to be-and not at all-outdone, Wesley Snipes steals an awful lot of scenes as the baser aspects of Compton lifestyle incarnate. They don't linger on that, they just glorify the passion, and that allows plenty of room for the very real elements of humor to slip through. Of course you can't make the sexual observations they want to make with just those two running amok, and so Sandra Bullock's in it too. Not the whole time though, Sly knocks her out. So it looks cool, makes some entertaining insights caustically, maintains its momentum and somehow...somehow...finds no intellectual pretensions in any of that, at all. Yea!
