EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU (1996) **1/2 When I see a Woody Allen movie I get a little disappointed if I don't feel inspired for life. I'm a little disappointed. I don't feel like I'm going to be inspired for life. I may be wrong though, there is genius apparent just that it's a more subtle genius. Woody Allen's subtle genius. Um yeah, and I hope I don't start walking around singing those songs. I don't like those songs much. Woody's usually so subtle with his music and it's so perfectly played...here it's all in your face-it's practically a musical you know-and I don't really like those songs. They distract and ruin the rhythm. For me. It has the elements of a Woody masterpiece-the shrink, jazz, New York-but the shrink isn't actually even in the movie, and the jazz is moved way up towards Broadway. I don't care for all the jumping around dancing. Except for the one in the funeral chapel. That was a really good one, and some of the other ones were too. None of them are bad it's just that there are too many of them. It's a great entry in the canon of Woody casting-Julia Roberts, Alan Alda, Goldie Hawn, Drew Barrymore, Ami Aldendral, Itzhak Perlman, Woody too-all just melt into these roles like slow flowing lava. It's even got some political commentary-broad brush strokes and the greatest one must be celebrated for its spectacular dismissiveness, which seems so appropriate because it is. So it's smart people doing smart stuff very well but I'm not entirely happy with it anyway. I suspect this is Woody's fault, and that it's his fault that I suspect it.
