FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF (1986) * I'll never forget the day that I read some august body of film critics ranking this in the top 100 films ever made. I laughed so hard. Much harder than...actually, I didn't laugh during the movie at all. Presumably their reasons went beyond the cool car and great dog, but if they detected any sign of life or spirit in the film they need to check the collective valium prescription. It is sniveling crap for people too scared to take any chances at all to live vicariously through a pathetic excuse for a teenage boy doing stuff that's almost entirely stupid. I have no idea how anyone can observe Mathew Broderick for any period of time without becoming nauseous. And yet, it's a tribute to love. I'll tell you why. I'd already seen this once, years before. Theresa and I were on maybe our seventh bottle of wine or something very late one evening...I was saying how awful this film was, and how some gang of idiots had put it on a top 100 list. Her recollection of the conversation somehow became clouded over the years, and having never seen it she came to the opinion that I'd liked the film. So she would always mention that it was on. Having a slightly blurry recollection of the conversation myself, I came to believe that she must like it, and want me to see it again, for reconsideration. So we watched it, me for the second time. Neither of us expected to like it, and we didn't. After it was over, we sorted out why we'd watched it. I guess we should work on our communication. But oh! the sacrifices we're willing to make for each other....(awwwww...) But neither of us will feel better if you watch it. Play with rats, if that's your other option.
