HOTEL FOR DOGS (2009) ***1/2 YAAAAAAY!!!!! Hooray for dogs! And...and for good-hearted juvenile delinquents who are kind to dogs!!! Yea, yippeee! But....BOOOOO! at humans who impede good dogs; boo, boo, shame! I am not going to claim that this is the most even film of all time, but its high points are of a magnitude to carry anything in some way slightly imperfect or whatever. Sure an' it couldn't be less realistic if they were all talking dogs, but I'm no longer young, I've been around the block a few times too, and my sense is that if you keep on at it and never give up things work out. And so it feels real to me, however absurd or, again, whatever. And what would any morality tale be without the Three Great Spirits?: Don Cheadle as the Spirit of My Generation, Emma Roberts as the Spirit of the Young, and Troy Gentile as the Spirit of...um, New York, or whatever. Drop your rock manifesto upon the world, like the haggard Lisa Kudrow and existentially oppressed Kevin Dillon. Dogs are those creatures for whom doing such a thing is so ingrained as to not even be an issue or consequence of their existence.
