IMAGINE THAT (2009) ** When did it happen that they decided that Eddie Murphy should always be the centerpiece in witless children's movies chock full o' flippant and featherless metaphysical implications? When did he let 'em? It wasn't a good idea. This is painful for most all of the entire film: how does any character become as depraved as Eddie's, there's a reason most filmmakers don't subject us to the most undesirable environment of corporate meetings, at least the child is winsome and wonderful, etc. There is, however, one entirely brilliant scene. A scene so great in scope and grand in magnitude that it in large part redeems the entire film. And that is a minor miracle. I assure you. That was a giant vein of happiness that The Beatles opened up, all those years ago. Incredible power and force of the moment, but also ten million little tributaries that can be explored and charted (as if you could chart such a thing! In PowerPoint, hah!) by the likes of me and you and the saps who made this film, to this very day. And this has a most satisfying moment of that.
