THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT (2009) ** Ok, we've all (most of us) seen this movie plenty of times: the contemporary monster flick blamed on some deceased but famous writer. Some people like it some, some people vaguely dislike it, and if you've really got an intellectual stick of some sort stuck you can probably manage to hate it. All of the totems are represented: the blonde & brunette totems, the beefcake, the eccentric older guy who knows so much…but will they really throw it all to the wind and take the blonde and beefcake out of the picture five minutes in? Well, in this genre, that would count as major risk taking. We complement our enjoyment of such things by making predictions as to who will be consumed by monsters first, and to tell the truth I didn't do particularly well. You also get points for going "5, 4, 3, 2…" when you think someone's about to be eaten, and I scored major points there. My bet that a McDonald's would suddenly appear on the lost island was for naught, and my wife's still insisting that she should get a point because she saw the blonde "almost have a thought." Mix in Germans behaving badly, a little bit of Bermuda Triangle stuff (one of them didn't know they were there, like it's a two square mile space or something), and that's pretty much the idea.
