THE MIGHTY DUCKS (1992) **1/2 Yeah ok, the plot is very predictable, the characters are loosely drawn sketches, no one does anything you'll need to remember ten minutes later... But it's nicely put together, particularly well paced, Emilio Estevez is just the fresh-faced kid you want in the kind of hard got turned the wrong way character that everyone can learn to sympathize with. It's fun. That's it. It's fun. Will the good guys win? Does it really matter? Yes, that's a central point. And does it? And do they? Hockey purists may object to this softer treatment of many of the themes dealt with earlier in the much better The Bad News Bears (hah! a baseball film), but on the other hand they might be so happy that anyone's paying any attention at all to hockey that they can overlook such silly concerns. I bet they can. Hell, some of 'em probably never even thought of it! :)
