MONSTERS VS. ALIENS: MUTANT PUMPKINS FROM OUTER SPACE (2009) ** There isn't a lot of plot, which is fine with me, and what they've got develops very, very quickly. They don't waste time re-introducing us to the characters, or pretending that the characters have been up to anything interesting between films, or that any extraterrestrial activity ever occurs anywhere but Modesto, California. They move right in to the action involving the pumpkins duly denoted in the title, cute awful silly little things that are a slapstick improvement on the title characters in Gremlins. It's funny, it's entertaining enough, it goes right along, it's over so soon that you won't be too mad even if you don't think much of it. There's not much to think of anyway, so there. That's not the message, that's the essence of the essence. So it's an existential flick, is it? Don't always have to think.
