MUST LOVE DOGS (2005) **1/2 There really isn't much about dogs. It's a ray of hope for lonely smart people-mainly ladies, but also sensitive guys-in their forties. Other smart people have these experiences and problems also. Thank goodness they cast Diane Lane and John Cusack rather than Julia Roberts and Antonio Banderas. I mean, Diane and John are both better looking, and smarter, than most folk going through this sort of stuff, but that all being the case they still manage to sustain an authentic feel. I realized that when I realized that I didn't care all that much about their characters, and thought about how many people in similar positions I had two hours to listen to their life story...and so they must all find each other, rather than me. Which is, fortunately, how the movie goes. They're both very good actors-and it doesn't hurt to have forever young Christopher Plummer and Ali Hillis at the edges-and so if you're in need of a shot of this sort of thing-and it's not difficult to imagine circumstances where someone would-this is one.
