NEVER BEEN KISSED (1999) *1/2 If it's at all fair to say that Drew Barrymore is pretty much always a variation on the same character, it's fair to say that this is about the dullest imaginable variation on it. Dweeb turned...older dweeb. Stupid plot, high school clichés (though with a ring of truth), romance with no fire anywhere near it...it's not irritating that its heart is in the right place...or at least a well-meaning place...but it's difficult to imagine anyone going into it with any hopes or expectations and not being disappointed...I mean, you're not supposed to feel sorry for her at the end. If it's not a terrible film it's at least a lousy one. Sean Whalen (as Merkin!) is the best of the cartoons, over-playing the awfulness of being inherently goofy to a level that's almost realistic. That's the best of it, and I'm usually benevolently inclined towards films that even tangentially reflect on baseball.
