9 (2009) ** It's well done, but it's really not my thing. Very atmospheric, unusual achievement for a cartoon, but it's all very dark, literally and figuratively, and mechanical and full of reprobate machines. Not for me. The sci-fi plot is legit, though; if you get bored by the machines you may struggle to catch up, at least on the technicalities and peripherals. Not that I think that it mattered all that much in this one, but great voice talent-Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer, Crispin Glover-and when Tim Burton's co-producing you can figure Danny Elfman's going to be hanging around the music controls. He stays ominous and on point, which I guess is good, although some heavy Elfschmaltz at just the right moment might have been disastrous to the point of severe enjoyability.
