SANTA BUDDIES (2009) ** A Christmas movie made for kids full of talking dogs! Yea!! My enthusiasm going in was only tempered by having already seen Space Buddies , in which the hounds in question seemed to be of a particularly dull ilk. So what do they do? They pretty much move the humans to the sidelines, which works well. Apparently the dogs just needed a little more room to get things goin'. So they romp around and get into trouble and babble along to each other...but...will it be enough to save Christmas?! I know it's kind of just a totem of a throwaway line, but that Christmas crystal is worthy of further consideration: does it represent the collective subconscious? Is it a commentary on the state of Christendom? I admit that the writers probably didn't wonder any of that, but you might. I find the line in the kid's letter to Santa asking for a dog-"We'll take care of him, and he'll take care of us"-very moving. So now you know where I'm at: I don't know if I believe in inherently evil humans, but I can tell you with absolute confidence that there's no such thing as an inherently evil dog.
