SON OF THE MASK (2005) ** With Jim Carrey safely out of the picture, the likelihood of grotesque disaster, and remote possibility of debris-defying genius, are absent as well. They settle into a nice little picture where you can just sit back and enjoy the excellent special effects: it's all very violent, but more silly (of course not as transcendently so) like Wile E. Coyote than the more disturbed children's violence of "Itchy & Scratchy." It comes replete with dog and baby, and if there are some elements than are only slightly more amusing to pre-adolescents than they are disgusting to well-adjusted adults, that stuff doesn't bother me much. It's not great, but it's a nice CGI exercise and stuff keeps happening, and, really, I'm not embarrassed to concede that I found parts of it pretty funny.
