ASTERIX CONQUERS AMERICA (1994) ** Is that a grand enough French dream, or what? In a uniform waiver, surely a parenthetical form of political correctness, Native Americans join Europeans in being duly mocked by the Gauls. I don't know if any of it is quite as vicious, or funny, as what's done to the Romans, but when the heroes look like these guys there's no reason not to have a little fun at someone else's expense. Asterix and Obelix, who are trying to rescue their resident Druid chemist, Getafix, are tricked into smoking peyote by a foul witch doctor, which is all the more disastrous as Obelix had attracted the amorous attention of Super Indian Barbie. Speaking of which, the impending Pocahontas craze is mocked at a number of turns, generally with the good humour of guys in horn helmets drinking magic potion, but occasionally with the bite of French cinema wondering if it shouldn't cash in on Hollywood big bucks. As usual, little variation on the theme of a comic book, which means that it's entertaining, and reassuring in a strange variation of hockey locker room camaraderie.
