BEST IN SHOW (2000) ** So what do you expect from a film about dog shows written by Eugene Levy and Christopher Guest? That's right, a bunch of humans with sexual irregularities, hang-ups, indulgences, etc. Now I don't mind making fun of humans-it's probably the most natural response to them. The problem is that they even present ridiculous dogs, which I find personally offensive. Only the bloodhound is anything like representative of the glories of the dog kingdom, and his master (Guest himself) is the only actor worth paying any attention to at all. I can see how someone might think that this is a brilliant film, but I don't. I'm just not into wallowing in other peoples problems, and occasional moments of absurdity (admittedly of a particularly amusing calibre) being spattered about just doesn't justify it all for me. It's pseudo-documentary style, like Guest's masterpiece, This is Spinal Tap, but I assure you, it ain't no Spinal Tap. Guest's closing monologue, though, is funny enough to bring tears to anyone's eyes.
