THE CITY OF THE DEAD (1960) ** "Seek and ye shall find" is not only a promise, but also a warning. So semi-dumb blonde Venetia Stevenson is out in the wilds of very foggy Massachusetts looking for witches. It turns out that they aren't nice people at all. It's cool that they build a horror flick around thought and theory (rather than blood and Al Gore), the problem being that the blood and gore people who came after have stuck to the same thought and theory (very old thoughts and theories), so it's not all that shocking after so many films. It should be, though. Instead, seeing the same ghouls pop up at exactly the same place just reminds you of a poorly made video game. Christopher Lee is the academic brains behind the outfit so it doesn't get too heavy or plausible. A reasonably well done and pleasant film about metaphysical atrocity then. Banned in Norway...so how are the Norwegians going to know what to do when the witches show up?
