DRACULA A.D. 1972 (1972) *1/2 Some of the music happens, the fashions are fab, please tell me that swingin' London was never this daft! At least the first half is simply unbearable, things only pick up after enough of the cast is vampirized that they're out of the picture. At that point, against all odds, Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee somehow coax a reasonably decent vampire flick to life. In fact, I'd never previously realized that Cushing had nearly so much talent (he doesn't sound ridiculous articulating vampire theories, now you try), and Lee has much better Dracula presence than in other Hammer/drac movies. I would suggest, for any future efforts, that if you're going to make a ritual sacrifice the centerpiece of your film, it might do to develop the victim's character. That way someone might care. Where do they get all these dumb guys who keep making deals with demons, anyway? I mean, um, is it really possible that they don't understand that evil entities do evil things? Why do they always think that the evil ones will be mean to everyone else, but nice to them? It's as dumb as voting for a Republican candidate who says that he cares about "common folk." Dracula is dissatisfied with Caroline Munro, because he wants Stephanie Beacham. Wealth maybe, but he's hardly a man of taste.
