ERASERHEAD (1977) * Stylish and full of interesting technical flourishes and radical use of sound, but barely more interesting than a textbook. I've seen reviews where this film is endowed with a plot, and I have to say that David Lynch must be laughing at those guys. It's not that there's no sense to it at all, just that whatever there is falls well short of randomness on the sensibility scale. I've heard that it's existential, and while that may be true I've never been one to consider all phenomena equally appealing or authentic. If they are, why not just go see an Olson twins film instead? I understand that maybe you can make up your own plot, but I'm pleased to say that I don't have any subjective pathologies to link those symbols. So it's not entertaining, it's more curious than smart, it's not scary, it assertively demands that it have no point, and I'm willing to believe it. If there is any point at all it must have something to do with the extreme adaptability of mankind: as portrayed, and in the audience. There, now David's laughing at me, too. Well, that's fine, I didn't laugh at the movie, but there were one or two scenes that made me snort through my nose a little bit.
