THE GIANT GILA MONSTER (1959) ** I love the way these old movies set things up, as if they could really happen. "There are parts of the world where no humans ever go" type stuff. Turns out that these parts of the world are only a few minutes outside of town. I guess they didn't go out much in the fifties. It's also quite obviously really a normal sized gila monster. That's still pretty good, though. In fact some of the scenes, particularly involving the train, are way funnier than if it had really been a giant gila monster. Much of the dialogue is spectacularly awkward in that way that reminds those of us who weren't there, of the decade in question. They want to rock, kind of, so long as it isn't too much trouble. Much of the script involves humorous incidents of drunk driving. There's really not too much more to say about it-the title says it all. If you don't know what to think of the title, I give up. If you find yourself watching it, and get bored, you can always point at the screen whenever the giant gila monster is on it. That will help others identify it.
