METEORITES! (1998) ** Lots of wonderfully caricatured desert 'zonies, full of preoccupied astonishment and consternation. Tom Wopat is the head one, Luke Duke all grown up and moved west. He's not as funny as he used to be, but that tends to happen to guys during those years in the middle. He hasn't got much better at exiting vehicles either (he gets out of a police car through the front window) or defensive driving (he drives a truck full of firecrackers into a mine shaft). His butchery of just the right lines are enough to make you sure wish that he could climb in the window and honk the horn of the General Lee, though! There aren't enough films about celestial events in the middle of rural UFO conventions, and so I hope that the aesthetic successes of this one will drive more young directors into similar bouts of greatness. The criminals are probably the funniest, so you've got to hope for them in the next generation of Godfather spoofs, preferably getting hit. Everyone seems a little...eccentric, but like Godfather spoofs, this one isn't so much making fun of the desert dwellers as celebrating the individuality of their character traits. Rugged individualism. Well, allright then!
