THE OUT-OF-TOWNERS (1999) ** This is the film that endeavors to answer the question: What's Steve Martin like on acid? The answer appears somewhat incomplete, but part of it is "monkey-walkin' man." The hallucinogen (taken unwittingly in NYC jail) briefly gives the film an adrenalin rush, but the effect wears out much more quickly than the usual 12-20 hours. The scene in Central Park of middle-aged Martin prancing around to the strains of "Let the Sun Shine In" is not entirely without pathos. It's fun seeing Goldie Hawn and Steve still alive and yukkin' it up, and they show enough to let you know they each have a couple masterpieces left in the tank, but this isn't one of 'em and John Cleese steals most of the best scenes.
