A PASSAGE TO INDIA (1984) **1/2 None of the characters are terribly appealing, so the point had to be that even the least interesting personalities can be made compelling by tragedy, and fate. Incredibly atmospheric, I don't think there's a bad shot in the whole thing. Alec Guinness is excellent as the Hindu mystic, the monkees are formidable in attack mode, and Victor Banerjee and Peggy Ashcroft both have some outstanding moments. The first half, especially, would have been more interesting with a militant gorilla or an extremely tall purple vampire, and when the monsters finally do appear they're invisible. Took it a long time to get goin', and once it did I'd as soon it did something else.
