PETE'S DRAGON (1977) * Mickey Rooney drinks an awful lot, but I doubt that it's nearly enough to make these songs bearable. I mean, unless your idea of fun is Helen Reddy singing absolute crap (and I say this as someone who admits enjoying a few of her pop cuts), or the history of pasting cartoon dragons onto film, there's nothing here. Jim Backus and Jim Dale might be components of an entertaining Disney film, but this isn't one. It's so bad, and so stupid, and so awful, and the songs are so unbearably inane...I mean, let's face it-I'm a sap for happy endings, and the happiest part of this profoundly happy ending is that it was the ending. Unintentionally comedic and inexplicable highlights, I guess, might be when they're all trying to grope Ms Reddy in the saloon, when the beer kegs explode into bubble bath, and when she tames a group of recalcitrant fishermen with song but, believe me, it's funner (and over more quickly) just to read about it.
