POPSY POP (1971) *1/2 Violence and deception in the jungles of Venezuela, but it's probably more interesting to understand what the film was really about. My understanding is that since Sophia Loren had abandoned Italian cinema for Hollywood they had to find a replacement. That Claudia Cardinale was nominated isn't as surprising as how they cast her. Actually now that I think on it...as an exotic French dancer with a frosted wig she probably wasn't calculated to make anyone dump their wife; but even as a jewel thief engaged in trysts with a really old guy, a helicopter pilot, a cop, and a religious charlatan (Georges Aminel in convulsively apropos body language) she fails to even make the character vaguely interesting. I'm not sure how much of it is her fault-it's a bad script and there's no one interesting around her either. Jean Herman adds a little more to the film by way of aural jokes, but I only counted three-which makes ten milliseconds of entertainment per half hour of footage.
