THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE (1946) **1/2 Imagine hitchin' down from San Francisco towards San Diego on a pre-Interstate sunny day back when District Attorneys picked up hitchikers, before California was polluted...and you end up in a damn film noire! Actually isn't that how the L.A. Times started, but I digress. Lana Turner is a near perfect package of blond dye #9, mediocre and overwraught acting, and bird eyes. John Garfield has a less than vague concept of double jeopardy but can bell big guys with feathery punches. The California legal system couldn't get a grip on secluding material witnesses from each other, and instead openly manipulated them. Prejudiced litigators openly wagered wagers on the outcome of ongoing litigation-in other words things were fucked up even before corporate money concluded its takeover. Just try and turn good and open a beer garden and watch what happens.
