PRETTY IN PINK (1986) ** The thing about the '80s is that they were only separated from the '60s by a decade. But the '70s didn't lead to this, it's something that the '80s did on their own. Still, there were young women who could remember attending the sock hop in pink chiffon dresses and beehive 'dos. I guess there's something wonderful about the incongruity, I'm not sure. Molly Ringwald's character doesn't have much in common with the Psychedelic Furs' song, but at least they didn't make a film out of "Into You Like a Train," that I'm aware of. Instead there are some good scenes with Annie Potts, and Jon Cryer memorably assuring Molly that she's attired in a "volcanic ensemble." It doesn't get much better than that-this film I mean, not life in general-but it means well and is entertaining in a John Hughes (who wrote it but didn't direct)-lite way. I believe that teenagers may detect some deeper social truths orbiting James Spader, whilst the jaded could find the entire thing contrived.
