THE PRINCESS AND THE PIRATE (1944) *1/2 Bob Hope's strength is exposed as a weakness. What are you supposed to do between one-liners? Say something funny! Virginia Mayo does everything that her role demands, often well, but what can she do but stand aside and hope for the best? He does what he's supposed to, she does what she can, a half pleasant sense that nothing will ever really happen no matter what pervades it all, and yet there is nothing existential or nihilistic about it, unless you count watching. Some of Hope's lines are probably nearly witty to those in the know regarding his relationships with his studio and fellow, uh, artists.
