RACE FOR THE YANKEE ZEPHYR (1981) * Donald Pleasance is drinking too much and hanging out of a helicopter trying to catch deer in a net. That's around the time of the opening credits and that's it for originality unless you count helicopter chases and boat chases (instead of car chases, you see, boat chases...). The plot is suspiciously similar to The Deep, but inland New Zealand is no match for underwater Bermuda, Ken Wahl ain't no Nick Nolte, I would never mention Lesley Ann Warren in the same paragraph as...actually the Warren role (and performance) must have been the inspiration for the exasperating (on many levels) and insipid whining of Kate Capshaw's Indiana Jones sidekick. Of course here we lack the special effects budget, the slick writing...you get the idea and George Peppard smiles idiotically throughout, a role that obviously would have been more effective with Leslie Nielsen. Two of the three people who started out watching this film with me literally fell asleep, the other picked up a book to read after about 15 minutes.
