ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS (1964) *1/2 The great name isn't even the best part, that would be the flashing red honeycombed bottom "enemy" alien spacecraft. The Death Valley and sets are all very good too, so the only possible explanation for why this settles into an excessive consideration of extraterrestrial boredom is that it's Daniel DeFoe's fault...well, not the only explanation, but it doesn't leave a great deal of room for an energetic young adaptor-why can't the boat or rocketship just go somewhere good? They kill Adam West off way too early, again in recognition of DeFoe's plot, thereby eliminating any chance of a "Batman vs. the Martians," or "Bats in Space," or "Alien Overlords vs. Earthling Superheroes" (Thor and The Hulk could show up! and/or Captain America and The Falcon!) explosive thriller. Yes, I understand that some of these beings gained notoriety after the making of this film, but the film was supposed to take place in the future. Instead we have some guy from Brooklyn on Mars looking for water with a monkey and watching his spaceship orbit and befriending a runaway slave and getting shot at by imperialists, apparently interstellar politics isn't much different.
