SCOOBY-DOO ON ZOMBIE ISLAND (1999) **1/2 Now this is a comeback. The mildly preferred by the cool kids afternoon cartoon short is reborn in full length for the masses! Scoob and Shaggy have landed the dream job of ferreting out smuggled food...ummmm, but how many frames until they've destroyed the evidence?, and don't ruin it all by chasing the obvious metaphor. Just as well because it gets them out of the office and on down to south Louisiana to hunt down voodooistic crazy ladies, which is something of a favourite pastime for locals and tourists alike. Velma's got a database. Sadly, credibility is stretched beyond complete redemption when no one drinks excessively, and not enough was done with the single muffeletta scene for my taste. The music is good, well, appropriate, but think what could have been done if they'd gone even more ambitious with Dr. John (or Tom Waits) singin' and playin' something like "Scooby's in the Graveyard." Still it's great fun and goes some way towards explaining why there's never tangible evidence of supernatural phenomena (who's going to stand there collecting it). Original cartoons from 1969 pasted onto the end of the video version remind us of what a long way we've come, and have to make someone else join me in wondering why.
