THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION (1994) *** Morgan Freeman is a great narrator, and he and Tim Robbins do very fine jobs in their roles as convicted felons. The film has sublime moments of humanity and a number of fine commentaries on the penal system, but ultimately folds to Hollywood twists and moments (were these in the novel?) that undermine its credibility as a witness to the finer points of humanity that it champions.
